Tigers, White Sox resume series Wednesday after rainout

Detroit lost series opener 6-5 Monday

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Detroit Tigers (33-27) will look to avoid a third straight loss Wednesday night after the second game of what was supposed to be a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox (32-33) was rained out on Tuesday.

Detroit will turn to Justin Verlander to stop the bleeding against a team that he has owned throughout his career. The White Sox own just 61 hits compared to 71 strikeouts in 283 career at-bats against the veteran right-hander, but most of those chances came against a very different Verlander.

It seems like every fifth game when the former MVP takes the mound, Tigers fans expect that to be the night that Verlander turns his season around. But the 31-year-old has shown no signs of that comeback, allowing five or more earned runs in four of his last five outings and a total of 24 runs over 32 innings in that span.

In his last start against the Blue Jays, Verlander's velocity was as high as it had been all season. But despite the livelier fastball, he was shelled for eight hits, five earned runs and two home runs.

Chicago will send out left-hander John Danks, coming off three straight quality starts that lowered his ERA from 5.64 to 4.32. Danks beat the Tigers back on April 21, allowing just an RBI ground out in 6 1/3 innings.

The Tigers have owned Danks throughout his career, boasting a combined .303 batting average and 15 home runs against him. Ian Kinlser leads the pack with four career home runs and a .382 average.

Detroit will finish the series in Chicago on Thursday night before returning to Comerica Park.
