The state of Michigan has become a basketball powerhouse over the last five years, and both Michigan and Michigan State advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament just seven months ago. But neither school was at the top of the preseason Big Ten poll released on Wednesday, as Michigan State ranked third and Michigan came in at No. 5.

Wisconsin earned all 27 first-place votes after losing to Kentucky in the Final Four last season. Rutgers received all 27 last-place votes coming into its first year in the Big Ten.

Michigan won basketball's strongest conference by three games with a 15-3 record last season. The Wolverines tied for the Big Ten title in 2011-12 and haven't finished lower than fourth since 2009-10.

Michigan State hasn't finished lower than third since 2010-11.
