University of Michigan introduces Warde Manuel as new athletic director

Manuel played under Schembechler, with Jim Harbaugh

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan introduced Warde Manuel as the school's new athletic director during a news conference Friday.

Manuel is leaving his post at the University of Connecticut to take over for Interim Athletic Director Jim Hackett.

"Warde Manuel is the right individual to lead us into the future," said university President Mark Schlissel.

Manuel was an athlete at Michigan, where he played under former football coach Bo Schembechler and was a teammate of current coach Jim Harbaugh. He holds a MBA from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business.

"I'm looking to be here for a while," said Manuel.

Harbaugh presented him with a jersey during Friday's news conference.

"I used to be able to fit into this," Manuel joked.

The permanent post has been vacant since Oct. 31, 2014. That's when Dave Brandon resigned from the position after enduring endless scrutiny and public outcry for his dismissal. Brandon's departure stemmed from the mishandling of player safety and the subsequent media barrage that ensued.
