Michael Phelps: ‘Nicole and I made a healthy, cute, awesome little boy’

Before the birth of his son Boomer Robert Phelps, Michael Phelps told Matt Lauer that he was excited, but he didn't know what to do.

"I've had a couple friends who've had kids over the last couple of years," Phelps said to Lauer on Sunday's Dateline: On Assignment. "The one thing that every single one says is, 'it's the best thing that'll ever happen in your life.'"

"We hope to grow our family," Phelps told fans during a Facebook live broadcast. "When the time is right, we will try for another baby. We would love to have a girl."

Phelps estimates he gets between 25 and 30 photos and videos from fiancee Nicole Johnson every day of "the little guy, and the little noises he makes. I get to see his outfit every day."

"He sleeps just like me, with his mouth open," Phelps continued, showing off a photo of Boomer from longtime coach Bob Bowman's phone. "That's pretty much how I sleep, too."

"My favorite part about being a dad is holding him," Phelps added on Facebook. "That's the one thing that I really miss this week. Being able to hold him, be able to look at him. Be happy and be proud that Nicole and I made a healthy, cute, awesome little boy."

Phelps is currently at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, but said on Facebook that he anticipates being able to go home to Arizona for the weekend to spend time with his family. His last competition before Olympic trials is scheduled for June 3-5 in Austin, Texas. U.S. Olympic swim trials are June 26-July 3.
