Big Ten football power rankings: Week 5

Michigan knocks off Wisconsin; MSU falls to Indiana

Saturday was a day of exciting finishes for the Big Ten, and some of the conference's top teams were knocked off. The East Division also asserted its dominance over the West Division, winning all three inter-division matchups.

Even though conference play is only two weeks old, two teams have separated themselves from the pack in each division.

Here are this week's Big Ten power rankings.

1. Ohio State

Last week: 1
Week 4 resultOhio State 58, Rutgers 0

Everybody knew Ohio State would beat up on poor Rutgers this weekend, and that's exactly what happened. J.T. Barrett threw for four touchdowns and the Ohio State defense held Rutgers to 116 offensive yards in the blowout win. The Buckeyes will take care of Indiana this weekend before a huge trip to Madison on Oct. 15.

2. Michigan

Last week: 2
Week 4 result: Michigan 14, Wisconsin 7

It wasn't pretty, but Michigan passed its first true test of the season Saturday, shutting down Wisconsin's offense and scoring just enough to survive at home. Michigan's defense stifled the Badgers, allowing just 159 total yards and eight first downs. Channing Stribling picked off two passes and Jourdan Lewis added one of his own -- the best catch of the season -- to lead the Wolverines. Wisconsin's only score came on a 31-yard drive after a turnover from Michigan's offense. Wilton Speight was shaky at times, but his throw to Amara Darboh for the game-winning touchdown showed what kind of accuracy he's capable of. Now Michigan gets to play its first road game against Rutgers and then take a bye week as a top five team.

3. Wisconsin

Last week: 3
Week 4 result: Wisconsin 7, Michigan 14

Wisconsin stays at No. 3 despite the loss because of its overall body of work. The Badgers have two good wins over Michigan State and LSU and gave No. 4 Michigan a huge scare in the Big House. Alex Hornibrook didn't react particularly well to Michigan's pressure, but he is still a promising quarterback who has a chance to bounce back after a much-deserved bye week. Even if the Badgers can't upset Ohio State at home in their next game, they are the most battle tested team in the West Division and have a chance to bounce back and make a run at the Big Ten title game.

4. Nebraska

Last week: 4
Week 4 result: Nebraska 31, Illinois 16

Nebraska put up its most uninspiring performance of the season Saturday, letting Illinois take a lead into the fourth quarter before finally waking up to stay unbeaten. Tommy Armstrong Jr. struggled running the ball, gaining only 12 yards on eight carries, but he threw for 220 yards on 16 of 23 passing. Terrell Newby paced the Cornhusker offense with 140 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. If Nebraska sleepwalks into Bloomington after its bye week, it might be in for a nasty surprise.

5. Maryland

Last week: 7 (Up 2)
Week 4 result: Maryland 50, Purdue 7

Welcome to the top five, Maryland. The Terps can be denied no longer after improving to 4-0 with a 50-7 drubbing of Purdue. Even though Maryland hasn't faced the toughest competition, D.J. Durkin deserves major credit for this hot start. Last season, Maryland's offense couldn't get out of its own way -- throwing 29 interceptions and completing fewer than half of its passing attempts. Under Durkin, Perry Hills has completed 61.6 percent of his passes and throw for five touchdowns and just one interception. This is truly one of the most drastic turnaround stories in the country this season, as the Terps are 15th in the country in scoring. Maryland's matchup with Penn State in Happy Valley next weekend is suddenly shaping up to be a big one. The winner would earn a chance to finish in the top half of the East Division, while the loser might struggle to qualify for a bowl game.

6. Indiana

Last week: 12 (Up 6)
Week 4 result: Indiana 24, Michigan State 21 (OT)

Just when it looked like Indiana was blowing a golden chance to upset a ranked Big Ten team, the Hoosiers turned on the jets in the second half and, with some help from Michigan State, picked up their first win over a ranked team at home in 10 years. Richard Lagow bounced back from a five-interception game to throw for 276 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the win. Devin Redding pitched in 100 yards on 19 rushes and the defense did just enough to keep the Spartans within striking distance. Unfortunately, a date in the Horseshoe doesn't bode well for Indiana's chances to start a winning streak.

7. Michigan State

Last week: 5 (Down 2)
Week 4 result: Michigan State 21, Indiana 24 (OT)

It was another rough week for Michigan State, which fell to 0-2 in the Big Ten. The Spartans built up a 14-0 lead in the second half, but missed several opportunities to really put the nail in the coffin. Indiana's offense finally came to life after a running back pass and then Michigan State couldn't get a stop. In overtime, Michigan State gave Indiana new life after a missed field goal with a heartbreaking personal foul. Minutes later, a chip shot field goal sent the Spartans home with a loss. Tyler O'Connor wasn't bad in the game, completing 21 of 35 passes for three touchdowns and no interceptions, but his hold on the starting job might be tenuous if Mark Dantonio opts to prepare for the future.

8. Penn State

Last week: 11 (Up 3)
Week 4 result: Penn State 29, Minnesota 26 (OT)

Once again, Penn State forgot to show up for the first half and found itself in a hole late in the game. But the Nittany Lions scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter to get back in the game, and a Tyler Davis 40-yard field goal with two seconds left sent the game into overtime. Penn State only needed one play on its drive -- A Saquon Barkley 25-yard run -- to score and take home the win. Trace McSorley only completed 19 of 41 passes, but threw for 335 yards and didn't turn it over. Defensively, Penn State allowed nearly 37 minutes of possession and 31 first downs, so James Franklin still has work to do.

9. Minnesota

Last week: 6 (Up 3)
Week 4 result: Minnesota 26, Penn State 29 (OT)

Realistically, Minnesota should have knocked off Penn State. The Golden Gophers dominated time of possession, first downs and rushing battle, but couldn't get any pressure on McSorley or force a turnover. Mitch Leidner was average, throwing for 241 yards, but Minnesota couldn't put the game away in the second half. Now the Gophers will try to bounce back against Iowa at home.

10. Northwestern

Last week: 13 (Up 3)
Week 4 result: Northwestern 38, Iowa 31

Hey look, Justin Jackson is back. The junior running back finally broke out for 171 yards on 26 carries, leading the Wildcat offense to 38 points. Clayton Thorson did his part, throwing for 164 yards and three touchdowns, but most importantly, he didn't throw a pick. Northwestern dominated the yardage battle, and cruised to a massive road victory.

11. Iowa

Last week: 8 (Down 3)
Week 4 result: Iowa 31, Northwestern 38

What is going on in Iowa City? Three weeks ago, Iowa lost to an FCS team. Last week, Iowa needed an injury to survive Rutgers. Now, Iowa loses at home to Northwestern. The Hawkeyes have been perhaps the greatest disappointment in the country, and now it looks like both Wisconsin and Nebraska are much closer to a conference title game in the West.

12. Illinois

Last week: 14 (Up 2)
Week 4 result: Illinois 16, Nebraska 31

For a while, it looked like Illinois might pull the most surprising upset of the week. Lovie Smith's team carried a 16-10 lead into the fourth quarter, but couldn't withstand a late Nebraska ambush, eventually losing 31-16. That's the best effort Illinois showed against Power 5 competition, so maybe its first Big Ten win is on the horizon against Purdue.

13. Rutgers

Last week: 10 (Down 3)
Week 4 result: Rutgers 0, Ohio State 58

In an effort to spare Rutgers fans any further torment, I won't mention the horrors that befell the Scarlett Knights for three hours Saturday. It was brutal, it was messy and it was graphic. Rutgers was already facing an uphill battle going into this season. Without Janarion Grant, Rutgers is facing a full-scale brawl up a 90-degree cliff.

14. Purdue

Last week: 9 (Down 5)
Week 4 result: Purdue 7, Maryland 50

Maryland is an improved football team, but its not exactly a top-tier team. After losing by 43 points to Maryland, it looks like a distinct possibility that Purdue could lose the rest of the games on its schedule. The Boilermakers' best chance at a win might be this weekend at Illinois.
