NHL Trade Deadline 2017: Detroit Red Wings trade rumors, news

Could Detroit make a move?

DETROIT – The NHL Trade Deadline at 3 p.m. ET on March 1 is fast approaching.

Here are the latest rumors and buzz from around the league:

The Detroit Red Wings could be sellers:

UPDATE: The Red Wings have confirmed the trade: Red Wings acquire 2nd Rd draft pick in 2018 and a 3rd Rd draft pick in 2017 from the Rangers in exchange for D Brendan Smith.

UPDATE from TSN: DET/NYR working to finalize trade for Brendan Smith. Not officially done yet but hearing pair of picks, incl 2nd rder, would be included. Pending a trade call (not official until then), DET will get 2nd rder and 3rd rder, both in 2017, from NYR for Brendan Smith.

Reports last week say Red Wings general manager Ken Holland is looking to sell. TSN's Bob McKenzie reports that the Wings are "getting lots of calls on defenseman Brendan Smith," but are also looking at an extension.

Detroit resigned Smith in 2015 to a 2-year deal, and he will be a free agent after this season.

Toronto is rumored to be interested in Smith, along with Riley Sheahan

Darren Dreger reports that "3-4 teams" are looking at Sheahan, including the Maple Leafs.
