Tigers' Opening Day game vs. White Sox canceled due to rain

Opening Day game canceled due to rain in Chicago

CHICAGO – The Detroit Tigers' Opening Day game against the White Sox in Chicago was canceled Monday due to steady rainfall.

The game will be made up Tuesday at 2:10 p.m. Eastern Time.

Justin Verlander was primed to kick off the 2017 season against Chicago's Jose Quintana, but hours of afternoon rainfall washed away the opener.

First pitch was scheduled for 4:10 p.m. Monday, but the White Sox announced around 3:45 p.m. the game would not start on time. It took less than another hour of rain before the game was officially called off.

The teams were scheduled for an off day Tuesday before finishing the series with afternoon games Wednesday and Thursday.

Detroit will return to Comerica Park Friday for the home opener against Boston. Michael Fulmer will take the mound against knuckleballer Steven Wright.
