ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan has released its football schedules for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, and one of the games that stands out is its 2019 matchup against Michigan State.

Michigan and Michigan State have gotten used to early-season matchups over the years, with eight of the last nine games played in October. Since 2004, the in-state rivals have played only twice in November, and both were in the first three days of the month.

Michigan and MSU have played later than Nov. 16 only twice in 91 games: the 1928 matchup and the rivals' first-ever meeting in 1918.

The two teams will meet very early in the 2017 season, with Michigan State traveling to Ann Arbor on Oct. 7, the earliest meeting since 2009.

In 2018, Michigan will play in East Lansing on Oct. 20. The rivalry game has been played between Oct. 15 and Oct. 29 in five of the last six seasons. The last time the teams played on Oct. 20, Michigan edged MSU 12-10 in Ann Arbor in an ugly 2012 battle.

Michigan won the most recent matchup, 32-23 in East Lansing, on Oct. 29, 2016. But the Spartans have controlled the rivalry since 2008, winning seven of nine meetings.
