A timetable for his return wasn't announced. It's unclear how Martin sustained the injury, but the team says it was away from the football facility.

Martin has been placed on the Active/Non-Football injury list.

Martin is considered one of the best punters in the NFL, ranking third in average yardage last year, second in net yards.

Martin is entering his 5th season with the Detroit Lions. It's unclear who will takeover punting duties.

This is the second major injury blow for the Lions this year.

In June, tackle Taylor Decker injured his shoulder in practice and is expected to miss significant time.

The Lions also placed six players on the PUP list Tuesday: OT Taylor Decker, DE Armonty Bryant, S Don Carey, S Rolan Milligan, OT Corey Robinson and DE Jeremiah Valoaga.
