Twins' Paul Molitor named AL Manager of Year

Molitor second HOFer to win Manager of Year honors

Minnesota Twins manager Paul Molitor was named American League Manager of the Year on Tuesday.

Molitor, who was elected to the Hall of Fame as a player in 2004, is the second Hall of Famer to be named Manager of the Year after Frank Robinson, who won the AL honors in 1989 for the Baltimore Orioles.

Molitor received 18 of the 30 first-place votes in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He also received six second-place votes and four third-place votes for a total of 112 points.

That put him ahead of Terry Francona, manager of the division rival Cleveland Indians. Francona finished with 11 first-place votes, nine second-place votes and eight third-place votes for a total of 90 points.

A.J. Hinch, who guided the Houston Astros to the franchise's first World Series title, finished third with 56 points, followed by former New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi's 12 points.

The Yankees decided not to renew Girardi's contract after the team lost the ALCS to the Astros in seven games.

Molitor guided the Twins to a historic turnaround, finishing with an 85-77 record after posting a 59-103 record in 2016. The improvement was enough to earn Minnesota a wild-card spot, making them the first team to make the MLB playoffs after a 100-loss season.

The Yankees beat the Twins 8-4 in the wild-card game.

Molitor, who was in his third season as manager of the Twins, has posted a 227-259 managerial record so far. He was rewarded for the team's 2017 performance with a three-year contract extension that runs through 2020.
