DETROIT – Hockey fan or not, this is a sight to see.
Say goodbye to baseball for now at least and say hello to hockey at Comerica Park. The ice rink for the Hockeytown Winter Festival is starting to take shape at the ball park.
The foundation has been laid for the ice.
"The rink basically sits from 1st to 3rd on the infield, just north of the pitcher's mound. It's obviously a gigantic construction project," said Jim Bullo.
Bullo is in charge of the transformation. He says it will take about 33,000 gallons of water to make this ice rink. That's twice the amount for the rink at Joe Louis Arena.
This rink requires a thicker base of ice since it's on grass rather than concrete.
"The thicker ice kind of makes its own base for itself and also allows you some play with all the elements that beat it up throughout the course of events and activities," said Bullo.
Tom Wilson, the president of Olympia Entertainment, says the festival is going to have something for everyone, from multiple hockey matches, including the Alumni Showdown with former players from the Red Wings and Maple Leafs, to live music and public ice skating.
"It's going to be an interesting experience. You're gonna be a little chilly but if you dress right -- you might be little chilly during the event -- but I think when you go home you're going to say I am so glad I did it. I am so glad I took in at least one of those games," he said.
It will be two weeks of fun with action on and off the ice.
