The Tigers traded Martinez to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday in exchange for three prospects. Martinez had been the Tigers' best hitter since returning from injury early in the summer, but with the team well out of playoff contention, he was sold to the Diamondbacks to improve the minor-league system.
Arizona is in second place in the National League West Division behind the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks currently hold the top wildcard spot.
Martinez struck out in his first at-bat with Arizona, and was called out on strikes again during the at-bat in which he was hit. It was ruled Martinez swung at the pitch that hit him.
The pitch was a 91 mph fastball. Martinez was unable to stay in the game.
