Lions must cut roster to 53 players by Saturday

DETROIT – The Detroit Lions will begin cutting their roster to 53 players on Friday. Follow the latest cuts here.

NFL teams must cut rosters from 90 to 53 players by Saturday afternoon.

NFL roster cuts 2017: Live updates as teams trim to 53-man roster

Per the NFL: "Simultaneously with the cut-down to 53, clubs that have players in the categories of Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness must select one of the following options: place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable; request waivers; terminate contract; trade contract; or continue to count the player on the Active List."

Lions have also released DE Giorgio Newberry, WE Dez Stewart and CB Tramain Jacobs.

Lions informed OL Connor Bozick that he has been released, per ESPN. 

The Lions have cut RB Matt Asiata, confirmed by ESPN.

The Lions have cut WR Michael Rectorm, per ESPN's Michael Rothstein.

Lions retain punter Kasey Redfern; Sam Martin to miss start of season

Lions trade former first-round pick Laken Tomlinson to 49ers: Tomlinson, drafted out of Duke, hasn't panned out on the offensive line as the team had hoped.
