Michigan football falls to No. 5 in College Football Playoff rankings

Wolverines suffer second loss Saturday in Columbus

The Michigan Wolverines fell to No. 5 in this week's College Football Playoff rankings after losing Saturday to No. 2 Ohio State in double overtime.

Michigan was ranked No. 3 in each of the first four polls before suffering its second loss of the season in Columbus. The Wolverines are now on the outside of the coveted top four spots that will determine which teams play for a national championship.

Michigan is ranked behind Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Washington in the top five. Big Ten championship participants Wisconsin and Penn State are ranked right behind Michigan at Nos. 6 and 7, respectively. No. 8 Colorado, No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 10 Oklahoma State round out the top 10.

Michigan still has one of the most impressive resumes in the country, boasting top-10 wins over Wisconsin, Penn State and Colorado. Only Ohio State has as many top-10 wins as Michigan in the country (wins over Michigan, Oklahoma and Wisconsin).

Michigan's two losses are respectable --  the first coming on a last-second field goal against Iowa and the other coming in double overtime to No. 2 Ohio State. Both losses were on the road.

Western Michigan moved up to a season-high No. 17 in the poll after knocking off Toledo to finish the regular season 12-0. The Broncos clinched the MAC West Division and will play for the conference championship Friday night in Detroit.
