Michigan football will play Notre Dame in middle of 2019 Big Ten schedule

Michigan hosts Notre Dame Oct. 26, 2019

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan has released its football schedules for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, and they bring back one of the best nonconference rivalries in college football.

Michigan and Notre Dame, two of the most decorated college football programs in history, have met 36 times on the field. The rivals played for 13 straight years between 2002 and 2014 before Notre Dame backed out of the series.

But the rivalry will return in 2018 and 2019. Michigan will travel to South Bend, Indiana, in 2018, even though the last game in the series was also played at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish will make a return trip in 2019.

Since 1978, all 31 of Michigan and Notre Dame's matchups have come in September. Since 1998, the game has been played later than Sept. 16 only once.

It will be a different story in 2019, when Michigan hosts Notre Dame on Oct. 26, right in the middle of the Big Ten conference season. The Wolverines will play two nonconference games to start the season, take a bye week and play five conference teams before Notre Dame comes to town.

The teams' last meeting in October came 74 years ago, when Notre Dame beat Michigan 35-12 on Oct. 9, 1943.

Michigan leads the all-time series with Notre Dame, 19-16-1. The Wolverines have won six of the last nine games since the series was tied by the Fighting Irish in 2005.
