Abbott falls on 1st jump during men's singles short program at Sochi

Jeremy Abbott wanted to best his performance in the team event when he competed in the men's singles short program Thursday.

Unfortunately, he faced a new challenge: Coming back from a terrible fall. Abbott fell while attempting his first jump in his short program and hit the boards. He took several moments before getting back up and continuing to skate. The crowd cheered him on to finish his program.

Abbott is currently in 15th place.

Abbott checked out of the Olympic Village in Sochi, Russia and into a hotel after his team performance to help improve his focus. Abbott, 28, told NBCOlympics.com that his practice days were disorganized because he was returning to the village and connecting with friends.

Patrick Chan of Canada, who trains at the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, is in second after the men's short program. He will compete for gold against the current leader, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan.

Jason Brown, who is representing Team USA in the men's singles, is currently in sixth place.

Yevgeny Plushenko of Russia withdrew from the men's singles competition just minutes before he was supposed to skate. The 31-year-old fell on a triple axel during the warm up and felt something in his back. He attempted another jump before deciding to call it quits.

The competition continues Friday with the free program.
