DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers placed star first baseman Miguel Cabrera on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a right groin strain, the team announced.

Cabrera was taken out of Friday's game against the Twins in the seventh inning after beating out an infield single in the fifth inning.

This is another huge blow to a Tigers team that's reeling after a strong 8-4 start. They've lost four straight games to the Rays and Twins and have fallen behind the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central.

In addition to J.D. Martinez's injury that has kept him sidelined through the first tenth of the season, outfielder Justin Upton has been on and off the field with injuries and shortstop Jose Iglesias is on the seven-day concussion disabled list.

The Tigers called up infielder John Hicks to fill Cabrera's spot on the roster. Alex Avila has played some first base for the Tigers this season, and they recently signed James Loney to a minor-league deal.

The Tigers return to the field at 2:10 p.m. Saturday in Minnesota.
