Miguel Cabrera, Gregory Soto join in AL’s 9th straight All-Star Game victory
Detroit Tigers closer Gregory Soto retired National League star Juan Soto to end the seventh inning Tuesday, helping the American League finish a 3-2 victory at the 2022 MLB All-Star game in Los Angeles. It was the AL’s ninth straight victory in the Midsummer Classic. Soto, entering in relief of Jorge Lopez, walked the first batter he faced before getting Juan Soto to ground out on a 100.4 mph fastball. Soto was one of two Tigers’ representatives on the AL squad. It ended his career 0 for 7 skid in the game and at 111.2 mph, it was the hardest-hit homer in an All-Star Game tracked by Statcast.

mlive.comFormer Tigers player testifies in trial over Tyler Skaggs’ overdose death
Four Major League Baseball players, including former Detroit Tigers first baseman C.J. Cron, testified this week that they were supplied with oxycontin by former Los Angeles Angels staffer Eric Kay. Kay is on trial for supplying the drugs that caused the overdose death of Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs in 2019. Cron, currently a member of the Colorado Rockies, testified along with pitchers Matt Harvey, Mike Morin and Cam Bedrosian that Kay supplied them with the powerful painkiller. Prosecutors argue that Kay gave Skaggs counterfeit oxycontin laced with fentanyl, causing his death after a road game against the Texas Rangers.
mlive.comWhen baseball returns, do any of these non-tenders make sense for Tigers?
All of them were free agents when they first joined the Tigers, although they weren’t traditional free agents. The Tigers loved shopping the non-tender market during their rebuilding years. The other issue is that the non-tender market isn’t terribly appealing. That’s why teams sometimes decline to offer contracts to those players -- “non-tender” them -- and they become free agents. Boyd might be the most intriguing option on the non-tender market.

news.yahoo.comWhere are they in 2021? A look back at Tigers’ Opening Day roster last season.
DETROIT -- Most of the players who made up last year’s Opening Day roster are still in the Detroit Tigers’ organization, although a good chunk of them are no longer in the big leagues. That’s probably good news, although it’s worth remembering that last year’s “Opening Day” was only eight months ago and the expanded roster included 30 players, not the current 26. In any case, the Tigers are still doing better than last year, when more than half of their 2019 Opening Day roster was no longer under contract to any big-league club by the time the 2020 season finally started. Tigers are counting on Robbie Grossman in 2021; he couldn’t be happier
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Robbie Grossman has been a semi-regular player for the last three seasons, but he’s never been in a situation like this. And he’s never been relied upon as much as the Detroit Tigers plan to count on him in 2021. “I have things expected of me, and it’s a privilege to have things expected of you,” Grossman said Monday after the Tigers’ first full-squad workout of the spring. It’s an honor, and I feel really blessed that I’m here.”Grossman signed a two-year, $10 million deal during the winter. Grossman, who grew up in Texas, was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of high school in 2018.
mlive.comEx-Tigers first baseman settles for minor-league deal with Rockies
Cron, whose 2020 season with the Detroit Tigers was ended prematurely by a knee injury, has signed a minor-league deal with the Colorado Rockies. The Tigers signed former Baltimore Orioles first baseman Renato Nunez to a minor-league deal two weeks ago, effectively ending any chance of a reunion with Cron. Cron signed a one-year, $6.1 million contract with the Tigers prior to the 2020 season but was forced to settle for a minor-league deal in what has been a chilly free-agent market, especially for mid-tier players. Cron is the last of five Tigers’ Major League free agents to sign a deal. Catcher Austin Romine signed a big-league deal with the Chicago Cubs, while right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova signed a minor-league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies and Jordan Zimmermann signed a minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.
mlive.comJordan Zimmermann, after 5 tough years in Detroit, signs deal with hometown team
Jordan Zimmermann will try to write another ending to his career after a disappointing five-year tenure with the Detroit Tigers. Zimmermann battled injuries for most of 2020, the final season of the five-year, $110 million deal he signed with Detroit prior to the 2016 season. “Everybody in that locker room loves him.”In five seasons with Detroit, Zimmermann went 25-41 with a 5.63 ERA (4.83 FIP) in 99 games (514 innings). Zimmermann is the fourth of five Tigers’ free agents to find a new home this winter. Catcher Austin Romine signed a big-league deal with the Chicago Cubs, while right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova signed a minor-league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
mlive.comEx-Tigers pitcher signs minor-league deal with Phillies
The free agent pitcher signed a minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. The Tigers signed Nova to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million last January, hoping he could serve as a reliable innings-eating. Nova is the second of five Tigers’ free agents to find a new home. Cron, second baseman Jonathan Schoop and pitcher Jordan Zimmermann remain unsigned. Catcher Austin Romine recently signed a big-league deal with the Chicago Cubs.
mlive.comAustin Romine won’t be back in Detroit in 2021
Austin Romine’s tenure in Detroit is over after one abbreviated season. The veteran catcher reportedly signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Chicago Cubs on Friday. Romine, 32, signed a one-year, $4.1 million contract with the Tigers before the 2020 season, getting his first opportunity as a No. But after a hot start, Romine hit just .238 with a .582 OPS in 135 plate appearances. If the Tigers opt to sign a catcher, veterans Alex Avila and Robinson Chirinos appear to be the likeliest options.
mlive.comShould Tigers seek a reunion with C.J. Cron or Jonathan Schoop?
The Tigers liked Cron a lot, both as a player and a person, even though he played just 13 games for them in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. But Kolten Wong, Tommy La Stella, Cesar Hernandez, Jonathan Villar and Jonathan Schoop are all potentially viable options. Schoop, like Cron, was signed prior to the 2020 season to a one-year deal. Both Cron and Schoop were due to earn about $6.1 million in a full season in 2020. And don’t be surprised if Cron and Schoop are among the names they consider.
mlive.comDoes Eddie Rosario make sense for Tigers?
The Detroit Tigers needed a first baseman and, three weeks later, signed Cron to a one-year contract. Outfielder Eddie Rosario, 29, was placed on outright waivers this week, The Athletic reported, after the Twins were unable to trade him. Would the Tigers be interested in Rosario at, say, one year and $7.5 million? It would certainly be enticing, especially since the Tigers need a left fielder, the position at which Rosario is most comfortable. Even if Rosario isn’t a game-changer, he would certainly be an upgrade for the Tigers, who have no viable options in left field at the moment.
