Dearborn partnership offers small business relief grants: How to apply
DETROIT โ Dearborn, in partnership with community organizations, is launching a small business relief grant program for businesses struggling during the coronavirus pandemic. The Dearborn Small Business Relief Grant application opens on Monday, April 27, with a May 1 deadline, for grants up to $5,000 providing small businesses with 17 employees or less and sole proprietors located in Dearborn working capital during the COVD-19 crisis. Business owners who previously have been awarded a Michigan Small Business Relief Grant or the Wayne County/TCF Small Business Relief Loan Fund are not eligible to apply. Through a partnership initiated by NEI, the Dearborn Small Business Grant is being led and administered by ACCESS, the City of Dearborn, East and West Dearborn Downtown Development Authorities, and Warren and Dix/Vernor Business District Improvement Authorities. โThis crisis has been a gut punch for every business owner out there,โ said Cristina Sheppard-Decius, executive director of the East and West Dearborn DDAs.
High levels of black mold shut down Dearborn fireโs Melvindale station, forcing crew to sleep in trucks
MELVINDALE, Mich. โ Dearborn firefighters who work inside Firehouse No. 5 in Melvindale had to sleep in their trucks last night after testing inside the firehouse revealed high levels of black mold, making it unsafe to breathe inside. UPDATE: Dearborn firefighters will move back into Fire Station No. Dearborn Firefighterโs Union head Jeffrey Lentz said the firefighter could not get rest in a truck all night, creating a safety hazard for them. In the meantime, firefighters at the Melvindale station will be housed at the Melvindale Recreation Center."
City of Dearborn unveils new logo, social media erupts with critique
DEARBORN, Mich. โ After a year-long development process the City of Dearborn unveiled a new logo Tuesday. The community voiced some concern and disappointment on social media after the reveal. More than one social media user said the logo resembled something a waste management company would use. The city said more than 1,900 community members and business owners and more than 30 stakeholders gave feedback on the development of the logo. Given the variety of socioeconomic demographics represented, this brand offers past, present and future residents and business owners the opportunity to rediscover Dearborn in a new way and strengthen community pride,โ said Cristina Sheppard-Decius, executive director of the East and West Dearborn DDAs.
Train derailment, possible hazmat situation in Dearborn being investigated
DEARBORN, Mich. - Police, firefighters and a hazmat team responded to a train derailment in Dearborn Friday night. The City of Dearborn provided video of the scene, which can be watched in the video player above. That video shows multiple train cars tossed around the tracks in the area of Dix and Miller. As of Saturday morning, there was no update from Dearborn city officials on what the train might have been carrying or the cause of the crash. Officers were encouraged not to approach the train and to stay at least 500 feet away.
