JACKSON -- Northwest recognized girls basketball coach Ryan Carroll for picking up career win No. 200 this week. The 200th victory came Tuesday, a 63-21 win at Eaton Rapids. Friday’s game against Interstate 8 rival Western was the Mounties first home game since his 200th win.

Jackson Northwest coach Ryan Carroll picked up the 200th win of his career as the Mounties beat Eaton Rapids on Tuesday 63-21. Layne Sleight led Northwest with 24 points, five rebounds and six assists. Ashley Weller had 20 points and five rebounds. Mara Mitchell had 14 points, five rebounds and six steals.

LESLIE -- After 20 minutes where neither side could break through, the Eaton Rapids soccer team got one on the board, then quickly began adding more in a 4-0 win over Leslie on Friday. Eaton Rapids midfielder Miles Thompson played a role in all of it, scoring goals in the 22nd, 34th and 49th minutes and assisting on a goal from Bradon Ellis in the 40th. Leslie had an early chance when a header was pushed aside by Eaton Rapids keeper Kyle Bush. Eaton Rapids coach Mike Decker said that his defense limiting Leslie’s chances is the same thing he’s seen from them all season. They just kept plugging away.”Camron West also had a chance in the 77th minute but couldn’t settle a ball in the 6-yard box and Eaton Rapids cleared it away.

As a team, the Mounties recorded 382 rushing yards with 233 of those coming from Izayiah Hawes. Adam Haselius had 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns. In all, the Panthers put up 303 rushing yards as a team. Landon Heavy made 17 tackles. The 17 catches is a state record for 8-man football for the most catches in a game.

EATON COUNTY, MI -- An armed standoff at an Eaton County home lasted nearly 10 hours Monday, police said. At about 9 a.m. Aug. 22, deputies from the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic assault in the 8000 block of Katelin Drive, east of Eaton Rapids. Deputies from the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team were called to the scene, and negotiators were able to establish and maintain contact with the suspect, police said. The 47-year-old Eaton Rapids man is set to be arraigned Tuesday. Deputies were assisted by the Charlotte Police Department, Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, MSP K9 teams, Lansing Police Department and Michigan Department of Natural Resources officers.

EATON COUNTY, MI -- A 35-year-old Eaton Rapids man is being investigated for several crimes in the Eaton County area after being caught hiding in a pond after a vehicle chase, police said. On Thursday, June 9, deputies from the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office took a report regarding the theft of gas from a vehicle in the parking lot of hotel in Windsor Township, eastern Eaton County. A man had drilled a hole in the fuel tank of a vehicle in the parking lot in an attempt to siphon gas, police said. Hatten fled the scene, and was later found hiding in a pond north of where he crashed, police said. Deputies found evidence of the gas theft inside the vehicle Hatten fled in, along with evidence of other crimes being investigated in the area, police said.

LANSING, MI -- An Eaton Rapids man has been charged in connection to a fatal hit-and-run from November 2021, police said. David Duane Brown, 57, was arraigned March 7 on felony charges of operating while license suspended/revoked/denied causing death and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, according to the Lansing Police Department. The charges stem from a fatal hit-and-run crash resulting in the death of 13-year-old DeJaven Bernard Hopkins on Nov. 14, 2021. Hopkins was found by police at about 1:30 a.m. Nov. 14 in the area of West Jolly Road and Kensington Road in Lansing, police said. Initially reported as unresponsive, Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lansing Fire Department soon after, police said.

In nonconference boys basketball on Tuesday, Leslie pulled out a 61-39 win over Grass Lake. Austin McKessy had 15 points, four steals and two rebounds for East Jackson while Devon Neely added 10 points. Pinckney 45, Manchester 40: Manchester was unable to get by Pinckney. Mackenzie Baker had 18 points, five rebounds and six steals for the 6-0 Comets. Lyra Nichols added 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.

EATON RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A Lansing-area jail inmate who escaped more than a week ago was captured over the weekend after leading officers on two separate vehicle chases, police said. Michael McKerchie, 32, was captured Saturday in Eaton Rapids after he was first spotted at a convenience store before he fled, crashed his truck in a cemetery, fled on foot and stole another vehicle. McKerchie had escaped from the Ingham County jail on Nov. 12, when he dismantled his cell window, sneaked out of the jail, stole a truck and fled the area, police said. He was discovered missing the next day when jail staff found mattress padding shaped to make it appear that he was in his bunk. He will now face additional charges in Eaton County on top of those anticipated in Ingham County, police said.

EATON COUNTY, MI -- A man who escaped the Ingham County jail more than a week ago was captured after two separate vehicle chases Saturday in Eaton Rapids. He escaped the Ingham County Jail late Nov. 12 or early Nov. 13 by dismantling a daylight window and also using mattress padding to form a fake body shape on his cell bed. Police think he stole a vehicle not far from the jail after the escape. An Eaton Rapids officer soon spotted the vehicle in the 911 caller’s description and gave chase. Eaton County sheriff’s deputies were already in the area to help with a perimeter and they began pursuing the second pickup.
