Enjoy summer fruit u-picks safely
A sweet summer highlight here in Michigan is being able to pick fresh farm fruit yourself. The good news is that many farms and orchards are switching things around to ensure a safe and all-around good time. One of those farms is Spicer Orchards, Market and Wine in Fenton. At Spicer, they have switched things around by putting many of their stations outside, including their tray pick up and weight stations. She hopes customers will enjoy it when the strawberry picking starts in the next few days, Mother Nature pending.
Thieves pick 7,000 pounds of apples off trees in Michigan orchard
Jeff T. Green/Getty(CNN) - Apple thieves snuck onto a Michigan family farm and stole more than 3 tons of fruit right off of the trees. Spicer Orchards is a popular fall destination near Flint, where families come to pick their own apples and enjoy cider, donuts and other treats. Rowe said the theft happened at a secondary orchard, where they grow apples for cider and to sell in their market. It would normally take a two- or three-person crew a couple of days to pick that many apples. "They must have had a trained crew to pick the apples in that short of a time period," she said.
Thieves steal 7,000 pounds of apples off trees owned by Fenton apple orchard
FENTON, Mich. โ The owners of an apple orchard in Fenton said thieves stripped the apples off 5 acres' worth of trees, stealing about 7,000 pounds of apples in total. Officials said a farm in Linden that is owned by Spicer Orchards in Fenton was targeted between Oct. 6 and Oct. 10. Matt Spicer, one of the owners of the business, said 7,000 apples translates to about $14,000 or $15,000. An apple farm in Linden, Michigan, owned by Spicer Orchards. The apple orchard doesn't have insurance because this has never happened before, Spicer said.
