Suspect in hit-and-run that killed pregnant Southgate mother given $2M bond
SOUTHGATE, Mich. โ Raymond John Alkewich, 31, is accused of killing a pregnant Southgate mother in a hit-and-run incident Saturday. He was arraigned Tuesday and was charged with failure to stop at scene of an accident resulting in death. Her family knows the arraignment wonโt bring her back, but theyโre hoping itโs a step in the right direction for the grieving family. Itโs believed that over the weekend, Alkewich ran a light and struck Strother, who was crossing the street, and then kept on driving. The court is going to assess a $2 million bond,โ said Judge Elisabeth Mullins.
Was it autopilot or driver error? Feds investigate Tesla crash on Detroitโs west side
DETROIT โ The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sent a special crash investigation team to Detroit Tuesday to investigate a collision crash involving a Tesla that drove beneath a semitrailerThe crash happened at about 3:20 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Waterman and Fort streets. The investigators are looking for any answers in what could have gone wrong with the crash. The passenger, a 21-year-old woman, is in the hospital in critical condition and the driver of the Tesla was also injured. The crash circumstances are similar to two others in Florida in which Teslas drove beneath tractor-trailers, causing two deaths. In both crashes, in 2016 and 2019, the cars were being driven while using Teslaโs Autopilot partially automated driving software.
Candlelight vigil held for pregnant woman killed in Southgate hit-and-run
SOUTHGATE, Mich. โ A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night to remember 35-year-old Jessica Strother, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Southgate. โI tried to reach and I couldnโt get her in time and she just got hit. Itโs unclear what led to the accident taking place but Johnson said the driver of the vehicle didnโt even try to stop. AdA vigil was held in the exact same place where Jessica was killed, near the intersection of Fort and Superior streets. I didnโt think that it even happened.
Woman in critical condition after car gets wedged under semi truck in Detroit
DETROIT โ A 21-year-old woman is in critical condition Thursday after a vehicle she was riding in became wedged beneath the trailer of a semi truck in Detroit. UPDATE March 16: Was it autopilot or driver error? A passenger in the Tesla -- an unidentified 21-year-old woman -- suffered from a head injury and was taken to the hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. Mausoleum broken into at Detroit cemetery, police seek culprits
DETROIT โ A mausoleum at a cemetery on Detroitโs west side was broken into early Sunday morning. According to authorities, the damage was discovered just before 5 a.m. Police said an unknown number of suspects broke into a mausoleum at a cemetery located near the intersection of Fort and Woodmere streets and attempted to gain entry into another. Victim and gunman in Lincoln Park neighborhood shooting knew each other
LINCOLN PARK, Mich. โ There is brand new information about a Lincoln Park neighborhood shooting that happened on Moran near Fort Street. Police spent hours in the neighborhood looking for any type of evidence they could find. Lincoln Park police were on scene combing the area for evidence and found a shell casing on the ground. Investigators are saying this is quite possibly a domestic incident claiming that the victim and the shooter either knew each other or were relatives. To make matters worse, the shooting happened right around the corner from a school.

Vehicle at Riverview gas station vandalized, police seek suspect
RIVERVIEW, Mich. โ Police are looking for a person wanted in connection to the vandalism of a vehicle at a gas station in Riverview. According to authorities, at about 7 a.m. Sept. 7, the suspected vandal damaged a vehicle at the Mobil Gas Station located near the intersection of Fort Street and Pennsylvania Road. Security camera captures video of deadly shooting at River Rouge gas station
RIVER ROUGE, Mich. โ A security camera captured video of a River Rouge gas station shooting that left a man dead earlier this week. The video shows three people getting out of a silver Chrysler 300, walking over to another and firing shots around 6 p.m. Monday at the gas station on Visger Road between Jefferson Avenue and Fort Street. His family identified him as Alex Minor, of River Rouge. The owner of the gas station, Emad Saleh, said the gunmen then sped up the street to get to Minorโs girlfriend, who was in another car with children inside. You can hear from Minorโs cousin and Saleh in the video posted above.

RIVER ROUGE, Mich. Two people were shot outside a gas station in River Rouge, according to police. It happened Monday night on Visger Road between Jefferson Avenue and Fort Street. Man allegedly robbed at gunpoint while filming in Detroit
DETROIT A man was allegedly robbed at gunpoint while filming in Detroit on Saturday evening. Detroit police say the 39-year-old man was filming near Fort Street and 15th Street around 8:20 p.m. when two unknown suspects approached him and allegedly robbed him at gunpoint. The two suspects fled the scene heading east on Fort Street in a tan four-door Lincoln, officials said. Police say a wallet, camera equipment and firearm were stolen from the victim, who is a CPL holder. Drivers block traffic driving donuts in Southwest Detroit
DETROIT โ Itโs another round of cars doing donuts on Detroitโs streets. The latest incident happened on Fort Street, in Southwest Detroit on Sunday. Both cars were holding up traffic, while people were watching and recording on their cell phones. When police arrived, a Detroit Police Cruiser started chasing a white Challenge, but is cut off by a black car. Moments later, multiple cars took off.

DETROIT - Fort Street is closed from Rosa Parks Boulevard to Trumbull Avenue for bridgework starting Friday, Oct. 4 and lasting until early December, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. DetoursNorthbound M-85 will be detoured via southbound Rosa Parks Boulevard, northbound Jefferson Avenue and northbound Cabacier Street back to northbound M-85. Southbound M-85 will be detoured via northbound Trumbull Avenue, southbound West Lafayette Boulevard, and southbound Rosa Parks Boulevard back to southbound M-85. What we know: Carjacking suspect arrested after shots fired at Detroit police
DETROIT - What started with an off-duty police officer being carjacked in Detroit early Tuesday morning ended in southwest Detroit with one of the three suspects surrendering to officials. The situation began before 3 a.m. Tuesday at a BP gas station on Fort Street near Clark Avenue in Detroit. An off-duty Harper Woods police officer was carjacked at a gas station early Tuesday morning. Police arrested one suspect later Tuesday after a short pursuit and the stolen truck crashed in Melvindale. While investigating the carjacking, a surveillance unit spotted a suspect vehicle and the suspects they were seeking.

DETROIT - Police equipment was inside a vehicle taken by a carjacker at a BP gas station on Fort Street near Clark in Southwest Detroit. Investigators said the driver went into the gas station and when he came out, a gunman approached him and hook his keys. The gunman then left in the victims truck. Police equipment was inside a vehicle taken by a carjacker at a BP gas station on Fort Street near Clark in Southwest Detroit. Investigators said the driver went into the gas station and when he came out, a gunman approached him and hook his keys. The gunman then left in the victims truck. Man found fatally shot in parking lot at Fort Street, West Outer Drive in Detroit
DETROIT - A man was fatally shot Monday night during a fight near Fort Street and West Outer Drive in Detroit. Detroit police said the 29-year-old victim was arguing with another man about 11 p.m. in a parking lot. That escalated to a fight and the man took out a handgun and shot the 29-year-old man. He ran across the street and fell to the ground in a parking lot. He is described as an 18-year-old black man standing about 5 feet 9 inches and weighing about 175 pounds.
