DETROIT – A 44-year-old Dearborn Heights man died Saturday night after his vehicle crashed into a construction zone on I-75 in Detroit.

Michigan State Police troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash about 5:50 p.m. A construction worker said he saw a car traveling at a high rate of speed through the construction zone and hitting large metal beams in the left lane near Schaefer Road.

State police said troopers did not observe any skid marks prior to the vehicle striking the beams. The Jaws of Life had to be used to extricate the driver, who was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There were no passengers in the vehicle. No other injuries were reported.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor, police said. Troopers are trying to determine how the driver entered the closed portion of the freeway.

Anyone with information on this crash needs to contact Michigan State Police.
