Former Gov. Rick Snyder pushed the Gordie Howe Bridge through and now he wants to walk across it
Former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder prioritized the Gordie Howe International Bridge despite strong opposition from the owners of the Ambassador Bridge and political resistance in the state legislature. Unable to secure state funding, Snyder turned to Canada, which agreed to finance the project in exchange for repayment through tolls. Construction began in 2018, and the $4.7 billion bridge—which includes vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle access—is now nearing completion. Snyder views the bridge as a lasting achievement that will strengthen economic ties and benefit both Michigan and Canada.
