Winner crowned for Film Challenge Detroit

Southeast Michigan filmmakers showed off their skills in Film Challenge Detroit. The awards ceremony was held Thursday night at Detroit's Institute of Music Education.

A panel of four judges crowned 'Akoma' by Alex Gasparetto this year's winner. Gasparetto and three others have won a trip to the Sundance Film Festival.

Gasparetto's film followed the romantic but dangerous relationship between a black slave and an affluent young white woman.

In second place was 'Tired of the Cold' by Jake Gross. Gross and his crew won $1,000.

The judges picked from ten finalists after the team behind Film Challenge narrowed down dozens of submissions.

This year's judges included Local 4's Devin Scillian, Live In The D's Tati Amare, Tim Peterson from The Specs Howard School of Media Arts, and local film critic Greg Russell.

Filmmakers had 4 months to write, produce and direct a 5 to 15 minute short film to the theme 'Opposites Attract.'
