Wet Saturday afternoon, chilly
Highs near 40
DETROIT – Saturday and Sunday will have higher temperatures than earlier this week. However, the Detroit region must get through an icy period Saturday morning.
Any Spartans fans driving to the noon football game or tailgating activities beforehand, need to factor a lot of extra time driving and use extreme caution. East Lansing, Ingham County and much of central and western Lower Michigan will be under a Freezing Rain Advisory until 9am ET.
Saturday afternoon will be wet but much less icy or not icy at all. Skies will be cloudy with temperatures climbing above freezing for the first time in many days in most neighborhoods. Southwesterly winds at 5 to 10 mph will help push highs near 40 degrees. Wolverine fans and families will need their ponchos and rain gear at the 3:30pm ET Michigan game against the Maryland Terrapins at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. Everyone should stay away from frozen ponds. The early arrival of cold weather has made frozen ponds and creeks very tempting to step onto, but they are extremely dangerous. The ice is very thin and melting will occur.
Saturday evening will be damp with steady temperatures near 40 degrees.
Warm air advection, where warm air pushes into a region, will continue Saturday night and prevent any wet areas from freezing. It will remain soggy with rain possible overnight under cloudy skies and temperatures that remain near 40 or in the low 40s.
Sunday will be cloudy and milder. Highs will be near 50 degrees. Rain remains a constant feature for anyone traveling to the Wright Museum, the Detroit Zoo, the DIA or the Fox Theatre. The Detroit Lions are away in Foxboro, Massachusetts, taking on the New England Patriots. There, it will be mild and brighter with partly sunny skies and highs in the low 50s.
Detroit will see low 50s Monday afternoon but will continue to get drenched. It will be a rainy day for students to enjoy indoor recess.
And just when all the snow has melted from three straight days of above-freezing readings, colder air returns Monday night with a possibility of rain and snow showers Monday night and snow showers Tuesday. Tuesday's daytime temps will be near 35 degrees. Sunshine returns Wednesday with highs in the middle 30s; a cold day for raking or cleaning the gutters.
