Mild with cloudy skies Sunday afternoon

Total lunar eclipse, supermoon occur Sunday night

DETROIT – Sunday will be cloudy and mild. A supermoon and total lunar eclipse will coincide for the first time in 33 years Sunday night and there's a slight chance that Detroiters can catch a glimpse of it.

Sunday afternoon will be cloudy and mild with a 5 to 10 mph southeasterly wind. Highs will be in the low 70s. Tailgaters outside Ford Field should face cooperating weather while they grill and play parking lot games.

Sunday evening will be mostly cloudy but it will remain dry with temperatures in the 60s.

The supermoon and lunar eclipse will occur for the first time in 33 years Sunday night. A supermoon happens when the moon is at its closest point to earth in its orbit. A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon line up with the Earth in the middle, so its shadow goes over the moon. Earth's atmosphere absorbs the sun's blue light, which is why the moon appears to be red.

The partial lunar eclipse begins at 9:07 p.m. The total lunar eclipse goes from 10:11 p.m. to 11:23 p.m. By 11 p.m. and afterward, a few breaks in the overcast may appear for a brief view of the celestial event.

Monday will be sunnier with highs in the upper 70s.

Tuesday has a chance of some much-needed rain along with a cold front. Highs will be near 75 degrees.

Wednesday and Thursday will be sunnier and cooler with highs in the middle and upper 60s.
