NWS confirms EF-1 tornado in West Michigan

DETROIT – The suspected tornado that hit West Michigan on Monday night has been confirmed by the National Weather Service.

The EF-1 tornado had peak winds estimated aT 90 mph, snapping dozens of trees and damaging barns.

The EF-1 tornado was on the ground in southeast Kent County and southwest Ionia County for about five minutes Monday night.

The National Weather Service reports the tornado started at about 8:36 p.m., and ended at around 8:41 p.m., staying on the ground for about 5.25 miles.

The 90 mph threshold is just above the EF-O weak tornado, which is from 65 to 85 mph.

West Michigan wasn't the only area of the state to get hit on Monday.

Clean up continues in Michigan's Upper Peninsula after severe weather brought high winds to the area on Monday.

Gusts topped 80 mph, creating a swatch of wide spread damage, knocking down trees and power lines.

The hardest hit areas were Ishpeming and Republic.
