Metro Detroit weather: Chance of strong storms, heavy rain Thursday

Scattered showers in the morning

DETROIT – We ushered in summer with fantastic conditions Wednesday, but we're in for a dramatic change Thursday.

Overnight, expect mainly clear skies. Temperatures won't be as cool, with lows in the low to mid-60s. Close to sunrise, clouds will increase and we'll be dealing with scattered showers with a few rumbles during the morning commute. These should not be severe.

We can't say the same for round two in the afternoon and evening. The best chance for strong storms will be in the late afternoon and evening. Intense downpours and winds near 60 mph are possible with these storms. West Zone areas may see the strongest storms, but they can’t be ruled out anywhere in southeast Michigan.

Those storms will be scattered. That will allow some areas (mainly Metro and South Zones) to get to 90 degrees. Humidity increases during the day, too. So expect heat indices in the low to mid-90s in the warmest spots.

Friday will feature a few early morning showers or thunderstorms. But the bulk of the day is looking dry.

Heat and humidity subsides into the weekend. Check out the 10-day forecast for more.
