860,000 without power across Michigan as high winds sweep state

Severe Weather Alert: High Wind Warning in SE Michigan until 7 p.m.

DETROIT – Consumers Energy and DTE Energy are reporting a combined 860,000 customers are without power Wednesday in Michigan as wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour sweep the state. 

DTE Energy is reporting about 600,000 customers without power amid this high wind warning, which is in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The outages are scattered throughout southeast Michigan. DTE began reporting outages about 10 a.m. Wednesday starting with 30,000. There is no time table for when power will be restored. 

Consumers Energy, which serves west Michigan, is reporting another 260,000 customers without power. Around 6,500 of those customers are in Washtenaw, Oakland and Livingston counties. Outages are expected to continue into Wednesday evening, the utility company said.

"We have crews working around the clock in difficult weather conditions and we appreciate our customers’ patience,” said Guy Packard, vice president of energy operations at Consumers Energy. "With the rough weather continuing, we expect this to be a multi-day restoration effort."
