Detroit auto show weather forecast: Cold with some snow to start week

DETROIT – If you're coming to Detroit next week for the North American International Auto Show plan for cold temperatures and a chance for snow.

Here is the preliminary forecast for next week from Meteorologist Paul Gross:

Monday will be breezy, but these breezes will shift to the warmer southerly direction. Skies will be mostly cloudy, and temperatures should rise into the mid to upper 20s (-2 to -3 degrees Celsius).  Note: One computer model tries to give us some light snow on Monday due to the warmer air streaming in and rising atop the colder layer of air at the surface. I’ll have to keep an eye on this.

It still appears that Tuesday will feature a period of snow – possibly accumulating snow – before a changeover to rain.  This is a very close call, and where you live may make a huge difference.  Those of you in our South Zone may only see a brief band of snow, followed by mostly rain.  By contrast, those of you in our North Zone may see several hours of snow, before that changeover.  It’s way too early to try and pin this down.  Highs should rise gradually into the upper 30s (3 to 4 degrees Celsius) -- and that high may not even occur until Monday evening.

A solid band of rain crosses the area Tuesday night, with steady temperatures near 40 degrees (4 degrees Celsius), followed by colder weather returning by the end of the day on Wednesday.

The Detroit auto show reveals begin Monday morning and the show opens to the public on Friday, Jan. 13 with the annual Charity Preview from 6-9 p.m. The public show runs Jan. 14-22.
