Metro Detroit weather forecast: Much-needed rain on the way Tuesday

Highs in the mid 70s

DETROIT – We desperately need some rain and, fortunately, it appears that we have some on the way.

After a quiet start to our Tuesday, an approaching upper level disturbance crashing into our humid air mass should increase shower and thunderstorm chances through the day. Let’s hope that this rain pattern holds together and gives us some meaningful rainfall, unlike yesterday’s rain that mostly dissipated before getting to southeast Michigan (only a few areas received anything more than a few one-hundredths of an inch).  Humid highs in the low to mid 70s (22-23 degrees Celsius), with a light east wind.

Showers gradually diminish Tuesday night, with lows in the low to mid 60s (17 degrees Celsius).

Wednesday forecast

Any lingering clouds Wednesday morning should start breaking up and allow some sunshine to get through at least for the afternoon.  Highs in the low 80s (27-28 degrees Celsius).  Note:  some high-resolution computer models suggest a small shower chance in the Thumb Wednesday afternoon.

Mostly clear Wednesday night, with lows in the low to mid 60s (17-18 degrees Celsius).

Thursday forecast

Partly cloudy on Thursday, with highs in the low to mid 80s (28-29 degrees Celsius).  A weak upper level disturbance crossing the Great Lakes is not expected to generate any rain at this point, but some models do hint at this possibility.

Mostly clear Thursday night, with lows in the mid 60s (18 degrees Celsius).

Partly cloudy on Friday, with highs in the mid 80s (29-30 degrees Celsius).  Astronomical Fall begins at 4:02 p.m.!

The weekend still looks like a fine summer weekend, even though it’s the first weekend of fall.  Expect mostly sunny skies, with highs in the mid 80s (30 degrees Celsius), and perhaps even a tad warmer.  I hope you didn’t close the pool yet.  And if you don’t have a pool, you might want to find one.  Or a beach.

Warm, dry weather continues into early next week, with our next rain chance coming on Wednesday with a cold front that will also cool us back to average September temperatures.
