DETROIT – The Local 4Casters are continuing the severe weather alert as the weather turns worse once again Tuesday night.
Fog has become dense in spots and will stay that way until after the evening commute. With slick streets, stopping distance is going to be a problem, so drive extra slow.
Precipitation will return for the drive home. This will be primarily rain, at least to start, and turn to snow as a cold front approaches Tuesday evening. Amounts will be minor, but winds will be a much bigger story Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday.
Sustained winds up to 30 mph with gusts reaching 40 mph are likely behind Tuesday night's front. That will add to the power outage potential in areas that picked up a lot of ice and didn't see much melting in the afternoon.
Throughout the night, expect wind-driven snow showers. Fog will disappear, but visibility will still be a problem in snow squalls. Lows are on their way to the upper teens and low 20s, and it will feel like low single digits by daybreak.
We'll deal with periodic snow showers Wednesday, fueled by Lake Michigan. Most of those will fade by lunch, with just a rogue squall possible in the afternoon.
Snow accumulations from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon will range from an additional dusting to maybe 2 inches where a persistent lake band sets up. Highs will reach only the mid-20s.
Thursday will bring improving conditions. Highs will hit the low 40s. Rain is possible late in the evening, but a lot of people might miss that.
Then, we should remain dry until very late on Sunday. A southern snowmaker might barely brush us late in the weekend. We'll keep an eye on that as temperatures return to near-normal cold.
