Metro Detroit weather: Storm chances into the weekend

Cool-down in forecast

DETROIT – A cold front moved southward across our area today with little fanfare except for temperatures:  at the time I am writing this article (3:15 p.m.), temps ranged from low to mid 90s (33-34 degrees Celsius) in Lenawee and Monroe Counties, to the mid 80s (29 degrees Celsius) north of 8 Mile, to the mid to upper 70s (25 degrees Celsius) near Lake Huron.

The overnight hours should be generally quiet, with only the slightest chance for a stray thunderstorm.  Most of us probably won’t see one.  Lows in the mid to upper 60s (19 degrees Celsius).  North-northeast wind at 2-5 mph.  Tuesday evening’s sunset is at 9:11 p.m.

The weekend

Partly cloudy on Saturday with a period of thunderstorms at some point during the day.  For those of you with graduation parties Saturday, I wish I could give you a specific part of day for these storms, but the three computer models available to me this afternoon each suggest a different timing:  the GFS model suggests late afternoon, the ECMWF suggests early to mid afternoon, and the GEM suggests first thing in the morning.  Now you know how difficult weather forecasting can be at times.  I am hoping that there will be some convergence in the models’ handling of the Saturday storms over the next couple of days…I’ll update you through the week.  Saturday should be warm and humid, with highs obviously dependent upon when the storms come through…potentially in the upper 80s (31 degrees Celsius).

Partly cloudy Saturday night, with lows in the low 70s (21-22 degrees Celsius).

Mostly cloudy on Sunday with thunderstorms likely…and I have the same timing difficulties as with the Saturday storms – stay tuned.  Highs in the mid 80s (30 degrees Celsius).

The Cool-down

An upper level trough will finally displace our heat and humidity.  Monday will be partly to mostly cloudy with scattered light showers, and highs in the upper 70s (26 degrees Celsius).

Partly cloudy on Tuesday, with highs in the mid 70s (24 degrees Celsius).
