Metro Detroit weather: Taste of snow before wintry weekend forecast

Chance of up to 4 inches of snow in parts of Metro Detroit

DETROIT – Thursday night is just the wintry appetizer for Saturday’s main course.

Flakes will continue flying through early evening. A couple of stronger snow showers might cover the ground in parts of our West Zone. Otherwise, we'll dry out overnight and get cold. Morning lows will be around 20 with single-digit wind chills.

Sun will mix with clouds Friday. Highs will rise to the low 30s with breezy conditions, keeping wind chills in the 20s.

On Friday night, our first significant snow of the season will roll in. Right now, it looks like the most intense snowfall will happen before sunrise Saturday morning, but the snow will continue to stack up through mid-afternoon. Most locations will end up with 2-3 inches of accumulation, with some spots in our North Zone reaching 4 inches.

This will be a fairly dry, powdery snow. Winds will be fairly light through the event, so we shouldn't see much blowing and drifting.

The snow will exit before sunset Saturday. Then we’ll stay dry through the remainder of the weekend.

Don't expect a warmup in the next 10 days. In fact, temperatures will drop even farther by the middle of next week.
