DETROIT – Happy New Year's Eve! Monday afternoon will be a cold but seasonable one in Detroit and Southeast Michigan.
Highs will be in the low 30s, which is typical. Skies will be overcast. As revelers get into preparation mode to ring in the new year, there is a slight chance they will run into a few snow showers or flurries.
Accumulations, if any, will be light; a half inch at best. However, as people drive or walk to the friends and neighbors to meet up before going out later tonight, they must watch for additional slick spots. There may be more slippery areas than those left untreated.
Fortunately, any afternoon snow disappears by nightfall and as the big "D" drops in downtown Detroit. Temps at midnight will be near 25, so partygoers at the D Drop or any other outdoor celebration will need to dress in layers and cover up with hats, gloves and scarves. Extra hand- and toe-warmers will come in handy and instantly turn any wallflower into the most popular person of the night.
Once 2013 begins, temps will continue to fall to near 20 degrees by dawn. New Year's Day will be colder with temps remaining in the 20s with mostly cloudy skies.
For those who hate the cold, try make friends with anyone headed to the Outback Bowl where Michigan is taking on South Carolina. This is because the game is in Tampa, Florida where daytime highs will be in the 70s and nighttime lows will be in the 50s with fair skies. Otherwise, at least Michigan's cold holiday weather provides the perfect excuse for snuggling closer together and stealing a lucky New Year's kiss.
