Winds of change blowing in Metro Detroit

DETROIT – As expected, winds gusted over 40 mph across many parts of southeast Michigan this afternoon.  The wind will slowly slacken tonight, so the only other thing to monitor is our thunderstorm potential.

As of mid-afternoon, it still appears as if most (if not all) thunderstorms will develop and remain south of the state line. However, those of you in Lenawee and Monroe Counties still should remain alert just in case anything pops up north of the state line, as any thunderstorm that does materialize in our area could briefly become severe.

The storm threat ends pretty quickly this evening, and we’ll have a quiet night ahead as the gusty winds shift around to the northwest, eventually diminishing to 10 to 15 mph. Clouds will also tend to increase overnight, with lows near 50 degrees (10 degrees Celsius).

We’ll see plenty of clouds on Friday, although it may become partly cloudy for a few hours. It’ll be noticeably cooler, though, with highs near 60 degrees (16 degrees Celsius), but cooler in the northern Thumb due to colder Lake Huron. North-northeast wind at 5 to 10 mph.

Mostly cloudy Friday night, with lows in the upper 40s (9 degrees Celsius).

Saturday looks mainly dry, with a small shower chance possible late in the day west of US-23. That’s great news for those of you participating in Rouge Rescue activities across southeast Michigan! Highs in the mid 60s (19 degrees Celsius).

Showers develop Saturday night, with lows near 60 degrees (15 degrees Celsius).

Sunday looks to bring showers and thunderstorms to our area in the morning. Some computer models then clear us out during the afternoon, while others hold that off until late afternoon. Right now, I’m banking upon the more progressive computer model solution, which hopefully means dry conditions by mid-afternoon. Highs in the mid-70s (25 degrees Celsius).

Partly cloudy on Monday, with highs in the upper 60s (20 degrees Celsius).

Things then trend relatively cool and unsettled for Tuesday through Thursday, with shower chances increasing, and highs in the mid-60s (18-19 degrees Celsius).

Reminder: Tuesday, May 23, is our second Weather Radio Campaign Day of 2017. We’ll be at the Meijer store in Warren. I’ll have more details in the days ahead!
