DETROIT – A teenage driver was killed Sunday after losing control of their vehicle on I-96 in Detroit, police say.

At around 3:50 p.m., the 16-year-old driver reportedly lost control while driving along a curve at an “extremely high rate of speed” on eastbound I-96 near Fullerton Avenue. The vehicle ran up the embankment, struck a utility poll and rolled, according to Michigan State Police.

The driver, identified only as a Dearborn resident, was ejected from the car as it rolled. They were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.

A passenger of the vehicle was also taken to the hospital and was in critical condition as of Monday morning. The passenger’s identity was not released.

Police had shut down I-96 for an investigation on Sunday, Nov. 5, but it has since reopened to traffic. Only one vehicle was involved in the crash.
