DETROIT – Consumer Reports is warning women about the potential risks of wearing eyelash extensions.
The extensions are synthetic fibers glued on one-by-one to the natural eyelashes, fixed in place with some kind of adhesive.

While the extensions have become more and more popular thanks to a parade of celebrities that wear then, Consumer Reports says that glamorous look can bring some health risks.
First, there are the potential allergic reactions to the adhesives, with are often formaldehyde-based or contain other biological glues.
Some women are allergic to those adhesives, while others might be allergic to the solvents used to remove them.
Consumer Reports also say that eyelash extensions have also been reported to cause irritation to the conjunctiva (conjunctivitis) or cornea (keratitis).
Some women also find the use of the extensions can damage their own natural lashes, which forces them to keep wearing the extensions, creating a vicious cycle.
Consumer Reports recommends women stick to using mascara only.
Mascara safely guidelines:
*Wash your hands before you apply mascara.
*Replace your mascara tube every three months.
*Don't borrow, lend, or share it.
*Never add water to the tube; if your mascara dries out, throw it away.
*Avoid makeup-counter application, even with a fresh wand.
*If you see any sign of infection or irritation, stop using mascara until it clears.
