Happy 175th birthday, Michigan!

The great lakes state celebrates milestone

DETROIT – As perhaps the most recognizable state on the map, Michigan turns 175 on Tuesday.

In 1837 Michigan became the 26th state to join the union under the watch of President Andrew Jackson.

Today more than 9,883,640 Michiganders call the great state home.

Local folk legend has it, the hand print of Paul Bunyan himself carved the mitten shape that is uniquely Michigan.

Despite tough economic times that have plagued our great state, Michiganders everywhere feel immense pride and loyalty to call the Wolverine State home.

Michigan is famous for its watery landscape.  And with 11,000 inland lakes and more than 36,000 miles of streams the state has many gems.

The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes shore line was voted as the most beautiful place in the country by Good Morning America in 2011 and Torch Lake can boost the third most beautiful Lake in the world.  What is your favorite lake to visit and why?
