Log cabin in Auburn Hills used as co-work space

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Ever drive downtown in Auburn Hills and see an old log cabin and wonder what it is?

The Den is actually a real log cabin that dates back to 1836. Long known as a place for students to plop down and study, the city is hoping it becomes something more.

“We’re opening it as a co-work space,” Samantha Mariuz, director of authorities for Auburn Hills, said. “People can buy memberships to use The Den as their office.”

The idea is to allow budding business owners to rent the space during the day for short term, or long-term use.

“This is for start-ups, for entrepreneurs and people that don’t have an office,” Mariuz said. “It’s for those who would like to take the next step to have an office or a shared work space, but don’t have the means. This offers them the next step.”

Talk about taking what’s old and making it new again. Next to original beams from the 1800s, there are gas fireplaces, computers and Wi-Fi.

“We thought this log cabin was a way to make it high tech and still honor the past,” she said.

Catherine Clardy-Lewis thinks the space will be very popular and be conducive to creativity and collaboration.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Clardy-Lewis said. “We have a lot of small business here in Auburn Hills, it will be a great way to get away. To have a space to work is a great opportunity for small business owners.”
