Fiat-Chrysler expands SUV recall

Nearly half-million vehicles affected

Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles announced the recall of 467,480 Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees worldwide to fix potential problems with the fuel pumps. The automaker says the fuel pumps could cause the vehicles to have problems starting, or lead to the engines stalling.

FCA says that the failure to start is the more pressing issue, and the company is unaware of any injuries accidents caused by the defect.

The recall affects certain 2012 and 2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokees sold outside of North American with 3.0-liter diesel engines. This includes an estimated 338,216 vehicles in the U.S., 18,991 in Canada, 10,892 in Mexico, and 99,444 outside of North America.

This is the same problem that caused a recall 189,000 other SUV's in September of last year, bringing the total of recalled vehicles to 656,000.

The Center for Auto Safety, a safety advocacy group says that this recall is inadequate and should be expanded because millions of other Chrysler vehicles have experienced similar fuel pump and control module issues.

The vehicles will be fixed at no cost and owners will be notified if their vehicle is affected.
