State grants additional executive powers to Flint mayor

FLINT, Mich. – Michigan officials have approved granting additional executive powers to Flint's mayor as the city moves out of state oversight.

State Treasurer Nick Khouri on Friday approved the Receivership Transition Advisory Board's recommendation giving more authority to Mayor Karen Weaver. She can appoint the city administrator and department heads, tasks that had been done by the state-appointed emergency manager.

Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement he and Weaver met last week, and he agreed those powers should rest with her.

Snyder determined Flint was in a financial emergency in 2011 and appointed an emergency manager. The emergency was declared over last year and the transition advisory board was created.

Flint has been dealing with a public health crisis since high lead levels were detected last year in the city's water.
