Bravo! Pet Food has recalled several products due to possible contamination. The recall includes meals for dogs and cats that were distributed nationwide. The meals have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can make pets sick and affect humans as well.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and possibly fatal infections in young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Some symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, nausea, stiffness abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can also affect pregnant woman and cause stillbirths and miscarriages.
Although dogs and cats are rarely affected from the organism, those that fall ill will show similar symptoms associated with humans.
The voluntary nationwide recall was issued by the Food and Drug Administration after an independent lab detected the bacteria in a recent review. Bravo! will begin removing any contaminated product still left in retailers' stores. The recalled products should not be sold or fed to pets.
If you suspect your pet has ingested the food contact your veterinarian immediately. The affected products should be disposed of properly in a safe manner. Returning the food is also an option for pet owners or you can submit a Product Recall Claim Form.
A full list of the contaminated products can be found at the FDA website.
