Music video for Big Sean's 'Light' delivers powerful message on violence, police brutality

Video directed by Detroit native Lawrence Lamont

DETROIT – Detroit's Big Sean released two new music videos for his most recent album, "I Decided," last week.

The first one, for the track titled "Light," focuses on what director Lawrence Lamont calls "senseless murders" in the United States.

The video takes us through various scenarios where innocent people are attacked, including a little girl shot during a drive-by, and two black teenagers playing with squirt guns shot by police.

Director Lawrence Lamont is from Detroit and previously directed videos for Big Sean's "IDFWU" and J. Cole's "GOMD" - also directing a short film for Big Sean's collaborative project with Jhene Aiko, TWENTY88.

"I was in a place to tears last summer when for a whole week there was senseless murder after senseless murder," said Lamont. "I spoke with Sean late in the summer who was on tour in Europe about this idea I had and he really liked it."

Lamont says he and Sean wanted to convey a message of unity.

"I wanted to show the victims and culprits before and after. So many senseless murders happen in the blink of an eye, but if you don't actually kill that person and a giant light beam shines on them from above then that'll for sure put things into perspective. Unity, love and putting mirrors in front of ourselves are my main goals as a filmmaker," said Lamont.
