Photos show 'blue ice' stacking near Mackinac Bridge

DETROIT – Michigan's iconic Mackinac Bridge is looking extra wintry this week, as "blue ice" stacks on the outer bays. 

Kelly Alvesteffer posted several photos to her Facebook page over the weekend.

Blue ice occurs when snow falls on a glacier, compresses, and becomes part of the glacier. The blue comes from the air bubbles being squeezed out, causing the ice crystals to enlarge.
