How much is too much sugar?

The not-so-sweet side of sugar

A sweet treat like a piece of candy here, or a can of soda there, can really add up. Fitness and nutrition expert Jody Trierweiler appeared on “Live In The D” to talk about how there is a not-so-sweet side of sugar.

“Sugar is killing us, it’s killing us and we’re not informed enough about the dangers of sugar, it’s toxic,” she said. She recommends cutting white refined processed sugar crystals out of our diet as much as you can.

When it comes to what sugar does to our body, “It enters your body and triggers an insulin response and your insulin can only do so much,” she said. After awhile, your insulin gets tired and then begins to shuffle it into the fat cells. She added that, “The sugar also damages our mitochondria.”

“Its more addicting than heroine, alcohol, nicotine combined,” said Trierweiler. So, how much sugar should we be eating a day? “For a women, six teaspoons a day, and for a man, 9 teaspoons,” she said.
