Detroit’s baseball and movie connection

Did you know that these baseball movies were filmed in Detroit?

When you think of baseball movies, what comes to mind? “Field of Dreams”, “The Natural”, “A League of their Own”? What about baseball movies that were shot in Detroit? Movie reviewer Greg Russell sat down with Tati Amare and Hobie Artigue on “Live In The D” to share about some baseball movies with Detroit connections.

The first movie that he talked about was “61″. The movie was directed by Billy Crystal and is about Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle trying to break Babe Ruth’s record of hitting 60 home runs in a single season. “Billy shot the whole thing at Tiger Stadium.” said Russell. He said the stadium was made to look like Yankee Stadium. “My friend was even the stand-in for Roger Maris.”

Next up, Russell touched on the move “One In A Million: The Ron LeFlore Story.” LeVar Burton played LeFlore in the movie about a man who found his way from prison to playing for the Detroit Tigers. Russell said much of the movie was shot at Tiger Stadium as well.

In addition to those movies, Russell talked about two new movies in theaters today, “The First Omen” and “Monkey Man”. To hear about those movies, and see how many reels Russell gave to each of them, watch the video clip above.
