2 killed in crash on westbound I-696 at I-96, I-275 interchange

The westbound Interstate 696 ramp and northbound Interstate 275 to westbound Interstate 96 ramp were closed for hours after two people were killed in a crash Thursday morning.

The ramps are back open to traffic.

Michigan State Police say a tow truck had stopped about 10:40 a.m. to assist a vehicle with a flat tire when a SUV left the roadway and struck the tow truck. The driver of the tow truck and the driver of the SUV were killed.

The two truck driver has been identified as 25-year-old Freddie Scroggs, of Westland. The other victim is a 37-year-old Canton Township man.

The husband of the woman who had a flat tire said Scroggs told his wife to wait in the car while he changed her tire, possibly saving her life.

Here is the official report from state police:

"Initial investigation shows that a Chevrolet Tahoe was driving northbound I-275 and had exited onto the ramp leading to westbound I-96. The vehicle was in the left lane when it veered over the fog line and collided with the tow truck that was stopped on the left shoulder behind a disabled motorist with a flat tire. The tow truck driver, a 25-year-old male from Westland and the driver of the Chevrolet SUV, a 37-year-old male from Canton Township were both pronounced dead at the scene as a result the crash. The female driver of the vehicle that the tow truck driver was assisting was not injured."

State police are still investigating what caused the driver of the SUV to veer off the road.
