Habitat for Humanity to build 10 homes for Detroiters

DETROIT – Buckingham and Bremen on Detroit's east side is swarming with activity, as Habitat for Humanity is building 10 homes in seven days.

This weekend features the Dream Cruise, but at the same time, dreams are being built right here in Detroit.

"I never thought of having my own home, I never thought it was possible," said Brian Davis, who's buying a Habitat Detroit home.

Davis is a disabled veteran who was hurt while serving in the army. He lives in a veteran's shelter, but now he's helping to build his own house. The house, sponsored by General Motors, it a true miracle for him. The house and Habitat Detroit will help reunite him with his son, who is currently living in Romulus.

"It's very exciting," Davis said. "I always wanted to build my own home, and as soon as it's done, I'll be with my son. He's 16 and we've been looking forward to being together."

Habitat homes are sold, not given away. Those buying the homes have to show need and put in hundreds of hours of work into their home. For that, they get a 0 percent interest mortgage and a $550 per month mortgage payment.

"And then you have to be willing to pay, and so our homeowners are working individuals," said Tara Franey, Interim Executive Director at Habitat Detroit.

What does 10 houses in seven days mean? Habitat Detroit says it means these volunteers will follow the instructions of a team leader and put up five houses in a week. Five others are being rehabbed.

After than, tradesmen will put in the plumbing and electric. The volunteers will then return to finish everything else on the inside, putting their final stamp on a family's dream.

Habitat hopes to have all the homeowners moved in before Christmas.
